A van exploded with two small children inside in Washington on Thursday afternoon. According to the Washington County Communications Office, at 1:52 p.m. emergency officials received a call reporting the van explosion at 915 Prospect Place. The caller said both children were able to get out of the van and one was having difficulty breathing. Air Care was called and then disregarded. Two Washington County Ambulances transported people to the Washington County Hospital, about one block away.

Police Chief Jim Lester tells KCII News that it is believed that the cause of the explosion was most likely a mechanical or electrical issue in the van. The two children in the vehicle and the two adults who rescued them were taken to the hospital. Lester said the injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

As heard live from the scene on KCII, multiple fire trucks from the Washington Fire Department were on scene, along with the Washington Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Washington County Rescue. The neighborhood was full of smoke and multiple intersections in the area were closed while emergency crews worked at the scene. Names of those involved were not released.
