Community Field, home of the Burlington Bees, was the destination for the Washington baseball team last night and on the big stage the Demons split a Southeast Conference doubleheader with Burlington.

As heard on KCII, fans experienced a pair of seesaw battles with the Demons triumphing in game one 5-3 in eight innings. They got on the board in the fourth on a RBI infield single by Wilx Witthoft and Reece Mayer made it a 2-0 ballgame in the sixth on a triple that plated Trevor Quigley. Luke Turner held the Grayhounds to just two hits in the first five innings, but Burlington broke through in the sixth to take a 3-2 advantage. The Demons were not phased and forced extras on a run scoring double by Ethan Patterson. After back-to-back walks to start the eighth, Reece Mayer hit yet another RBI triple that proved to be the game winner. The junior turned around and retired all three batters he faced to record the save. Turner tossed seven frames giving up nine hits and three runs. Mayer had the two knocks with two RBI and Quigley also had a pair of hits.

The nightcap was close for awhile, but things unraveled for Washington in the later innings to fall 11-7. Down 4-1 in the fifth, the Demons took a 5-4 advantage after RBI hits from Patterson, Turner, and Brady Knutson. The lead was short lived however, as Burlington scored two in the sixth and defensive miscues led to a five run seventh to put the game out of reach. Zeke Slagel started the game for Washington and tossed four innings giving up four tallies on three hits. Turner and Knutson each had two hits with two runs brought in.

Washington is now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the SEC. They get back on the diamond Monday at Keokuk.
