In the last two decades the average annual lightning fatalities in the United States has dropped from about 55 per year to less than 30. This week is National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. From 2010 to 2019, two people in Iowa have died from lightning strikes. Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen advises what to do if you’re outside and hear thunder, “If you’re in range then you’re in range of lightning, so get inside.”
The National Weather Service advises if you are outside and lightning starts, then you should move inside. If you are not near shelter, avoid open fields, stay away from tall and isolated trees, stay away from water, and if you are with a group of people spread out to avoid the current traveling through group members.
Any time a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for Washington County, KCII stops regular programming and brings you live coverage of the storm.
