Since 2008, Main Street Washington has tracked 89 building projects and $12.2 million in private investment in building rehabilitation and acquisition, and it has been designated as a 2020 Accredited Main Street America program. The accredited status is Main Street America’s “top tier of recognition and signifies a demonstrated commitment to comprehensive commercial district revitalization.” Washington’s program is one of 860 across the country to receive this accreditation.
Main Street Iowa works to identify local programs that meet 10 performance standards including comprehensive and sustainable revitalization, fostering public-private partnerships, and preserving historic buildings. Main Street Washington Director Sarah Grunewaldt explains that each year Main Street Washington goes through the accreditation process, which helps with growth and continued work in downtown Washington.
