School districts’ return to learning plans came due to the Iowa Department of Education this week. Highland Superintendent Ken Crawford has met with various staff from the district to come up with a viable return to learn plan before the July 1st deadline. He says the work due to the department of education is complete, but there are still large issues to discuss and additions to be made to the plan before the start of school in August, “I think the big thing is how are you going to handle knowing that everybody in the classroom is temperature safe, they’re not spreading germs, maybe not knowing it and being unsafe in that environment. I think the big rocks are just about transportation, being in a classroom that when they say six feet apart you know you have a classroom of 20 kids, you’re not going to be six feet apart in those kinds of things. Just doing the things the CDC said a month ago about covering your cough, wash your hands, if you don’t feel well stay home. Quite frankly from what I’ve seen with summer sports, I think people are willing to do that just to have any sort of normalcy come back to them.” Crawford announced last week the school district will return to in-person, on-site learning starting August 24th.
