Excitement was plentiful for the Columbus Community softball team on Tuesday night when they stunned Highland in an area matchup for their first win of the season.

The Wildcats settled in early scratching across a run in the first, added two more in the third, and shut the door with a three run sixth en route to a 6-1 win. Emma Milder brought the offense for Columbus finishing with three of their eight hits and knocking in a run. Jocelyn Fulton had a pair of hits and two RBI. Libby White kept the Huskies bats at bay all night finishing with a complete game in the circle giving up one run on six hits. Highland’s Jenna Sands went 2-for-3 with one RBI and Grace Batcheller tossed three frames giving up three runs and three knocks.

The night marks the first Wildcat victory over the Huskies in five seasons and Head Coach Katie Coil was ecstatic. “It was amazing. It was senior night so it was good to give our seniors a great win against a quality ball club. We were on cloud nine and I don’t think I went to sleep until 3:30 a.m. because I was so excited for our team. Anytime you can beat a Carrie Wieland softball team you know you brought your A game.” Columbus is now 1-5 and Highland is 5-5.

The baseball game was all Huskies with a 10-run second inning leading to a 15-3 win in five. Cael Yeggy and Chase Schultz each brought in three tallies and Trevor McFarland had a pair of doubles. Connor Grinstead, Kaige Vonnahme, and Mason McFarland combined for five innings on the bump giving up two earned runs on seven hits and striking out 10.

The Huskies improve to 6-3 and Columbus drops to 0-7.
