While the COVID-19 pandemic has sidelined many school activities, the Highland Lego League Team didn’t let that stop them from working hard. The team, led by Head Coach Samantha Holden, received a $1,100 grant from the Riverside City Council to help with their project to improve the bathrooms at Conservation Park in Riverside. While the team did not receive the full $3,500 they asked for, Holden believes not receiving the full amount was a learning opportunity for her team, “That’s kind of what we expected. You ask for the stars and you’re happy with the moon. They said really the roof didn’t really need to be replaced which was one of the things the kids thought. They were like let’s try scrubbing it down, which made a huge difference. People with the city do have way more experience than eighth graders, but they showed them that there are things you can do besides replacing every single detail. I think that actually gave the kids a little more knowledge on that kind of stuff, to not get the full amount that they asked for.” The renovation project includes replacing the door screen and toilet paper holders, adding new air fresheners, hand sanitizer, locks on the doors, and spraying down and scrubbing the building. This project was set to be completed in the spring, but due to COVID-19, the new completion date is set for the end of July.
