The baseball and softball seasons have been the testing grounds for how the school year might be structured, says Highland Superintendent Ken Crawford. The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union have created rules to limit players and crowd members from spreading COVID-19. Those rules include social distancing, no concession stands, and limited contact between fans, players, coaches, and game staff. Crawford expects similar rules and guidance when school begins in the fall, “Summer sports has been a great testing ground for temperature checks and crowd control, and kids and athletes taking responsibility for being sick and not being here. I think that’s been a good start. That’ll go a long way to helping us, and the state, decide what we should do in August.” The Highland school board has submitted its return to learn plan to the state as COVID-19 continues to circulate. The Highland school board has discussed various aspects and challenges of returning to normal classes, such as releasing classes at staggered times, temperature checks, and whether or not to require face masks. No official decisions on such measures have been made yet. Crawford says this plan will start to take shape by early August as the ongoing health situation is better understood at that point.
