One woman was taken by helicopter to the hospital and later died after her van caught fire in Washington on Monday. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, at 2:53 p.m. a Chrysler Town and Country van driven by 86-year-old Phyllis Hagensick of Washington caught fire. The vehicle went down West Main Street and hit a dead end, then Hagensick attempted to turn around and the vehicle got high centered possibly causing damage to the undercarriage.
The van then went northbound until it became fully engulfed in flames. The driver was able to exit the vehicle. She was taken by AirCare to the University of Iowa Hospital. She passed away Monday.
The Washington Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff’s personnel, Washington County Ambulance, and Washington Police Department assisted at the scene.
