The game was in doubt the entire way, but the Washington baseball team never trailed and held on late to get a bounce back road win last night against Oskaloosa 9-8.

As heard on KCII, the energy was high for the Demons right from the start plating five runs in the first headlined by RBI hits from Brady Knutson and Luke Turner. The  Indians (12-5) immediately answered with four tallies in the bottom half and the roller coaster of a ride commenced. The Demons would tack on two more in third, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth on a RBI hit from Reece Mayer, but the Indians would never go away. Up 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Ethan Zieglowsky relieved Knutson on the hill with the bases loaded and no one out. A fielder’s choice, pop out, and ground out later stranded the potential game tying run at third and the Demons captured a big road victory. Knutson finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. Lucas Kroll went 3-for-4 with one driven in. Luke Turner recorded the win tossing five frames giving up three earned runs on three hits and striking out seven.

Head Coach Nathan Miller tells KCII Sports they were able to limit the damage against the Indian offense including a huge play in the fourth. “Brandon Dickel made the play of the game in the fourth that was a huge turning point. He had a diving stop at second to throw out the runner at first and we were able to minimize the inning. If he doesn’t make that play they have runners at the corners and an opportunity for a big inning. That was a huge play for our team.”

Washington improves to 8-6 overall and they get back on the diamond tonight hosting Clear Creek Amana. Yesterday, the class 3A district pairings were released and Washington will travel to face Solon in the first round next Friday. The originally scheduled regular season finale against the Spartans on Tuesday has been cancelled.
