A permanent water main loop system is being installed on the former Shiloh property. While development of a subdivision on the newly annexed Kalona property has not yet started, this new water main will set the groundwork for future residential development. It will also help improve the water main system in Kalona. Work on this water main has already started, with crews from Maxwell Construction installing valves and hydrants this week. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh explains why this work is being done now instead of later, “It’ll allow us as a city to have a bypass so that if there’s ever a water break or a situation where we have to do repairs in a certain area, we can still feed those customers water through a secondary route. It’s beneficial to them in the sense that it’ll allow them to do the infrastructure work they want at the appropriate time that the council and [Planning and Zoning] is comfortable with.” The installation of the permanent water main, connecting two city water mains north of the water plant and on Nutmeg Avenue, will continue services to residents in Richmond and along 133rd Street. The project will take two weeks to complete and will cost developers CJ Moyna and Sons approximately $70,000.
