A statewide program aimed at getting more Iowans fresh produce in their kitchens is coming to the Washington Farmers’ Market. Iowa’s Healthiest State initiative has launched the Double Up Food Bucks program so that for every dollar spent on produce using SNAP benefits the consumer gets another dollar to purchase more fruits and vegetables.
Main Street Washington Director Sarah Grunewaldt says starting this Thursday the Washington Farmers’ Market is taking part in this, “The farmers’ market vendors themselves will get paid for the product that they’re selling with those coupons. But then also people who maybe need a little leg up in the world will get those extra coupons to help get more fresh produce in their hands and in their families’ bellies. Healthy food, absolutely – and the goal is keeping it local. It’s more green; it’s more eco-friendly. You’re also making a connection with other people. So, it’s all wonderful all the way around.”
To take part, go to the information table at the farmers’ market and redeem some SNAP benefits for tokens to use at the market.
In addition to farmers’ markets, grocery stores can also take part in the program. Click here to see which grocery stores across the state are helping people double up their produce.
