The celebration was on at Dick Sojka Memorial Field in Washington’s final home baseball game of the season after a walk-off single from Trevor Quigley propelled the Demons past Pella 4-3 on Monday.
As heard on KCII, the Dutch got out to a fast start with a two-run bomb off the bat of Nick DeJong in the first, but the Demons immediately tied it in the bottom half in part by a throwing error and RBI single from Lucas Kroll. Washington took a brief lead in the second after a two-out knock from Luke Turner, but Pella evened it back up at 3-3 in the third. Solid pitching and defense ensued with the score holding true heading into the seventh. Brady Knutson got into some trouble in the top half with a bases loaded one-out jam, but the senior fired back-to-back punch outs to preserve the tie. After a hit batter and walk in the bottom half, Quigley scolded a single to left field with two outs that plated Knutson for the winning run and the party commenced on the field. The Demons scattered four hits and had seven free passes. Knutson picked up the win with three strikeouts in his one inning. Ethan Patterson tossed two scoreless frames and starter Lucas Kroll gave up six hits and three runs in four innings of work.
Head Coach Nathan Miller tells KCII Sports doing the little things right got the job done. “What a game that was back and forth the entire time. We had a lot of great plays that made a huge difference like Dillan Sanders’ fantastic diving catch in right, Brandon Dickel diving grab at second, and Brady stepping up to get out of a jam. In the bottom of the seventh the top of our lineup battled through to get a runner in scoring position and how about senior Trevor Quigley in his final home game gets the job done.”
The Demons close the regular season 9-7 and the fun starts Friday when they travel to Solon (13-6) for a first round class 3A district matchup.
