The start of the new school year is quickly approaching, and E-sports teams across Iowa are looking to return to competition. The Iowa High School E-sports Association (IHSEA) was only four games into it’s spring season when the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled their remaining games. This summer E-sports athletes at WACO high school continued to compete with others from other schools. Coach Drew Ayrit was surprised, but proud to see the competitive spirit alive in his students. Ayrit hopes E-sports can find an opportunity to grow this upcoming school year, “For myself, just being an advocate for E-sports and seeing the good that it can bring to a school or community, I’m hopeful that we can at least operate in some capacity. That will potentially grow our organization if say for instance a typical athletic event can’t be carried out, maybe those students can find an alternative in being able to do E-sports, even if it isn’t in an official competition.” The IHSEA has a lineup of six games students will compete in during their three seasons in the fall, winter, and spring. Ayrit says his Rocket League team was undefeated before the season was cut short, and looks to continue their winning ways.
