Hot and humid weather this weekend could cause respiratory issues, or even be detrimental to larger animals. The heat index this weekend is  expected to reach up to 105 degrees, where animals such as pigs and cows could experience heat stress. These animals have difficulties expelling heat, so they rely on higher respiration rates and spread out from their peers to cool off. Farmers can help cool off larger animals and prevent heat-related casualties. Iowa State Extension Swine Specialist Matthew Romoser recommends ensuring that pigs have adequate water sources, water flow, and ventilation in their facilities to make these animals as comfortable as possible. Pigs should also be fed during the cooler parts of the day as eating increases their body temperature, much like humans. ISU Beef Extension Veterinarian Dr. Grant Dewell recommends cows not be worked during times of extreme heat. Cows can take up to six hours to dissipate their heat load, so working cows in the early morning hours is ideal according to Dewell.
