The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team clinched a spot at the state tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines on Wednesday night with a 9-7 win over Central Lee. However, the Golden Hawks and their fans spent most of Thursday waiting to see who they would face in the opener in the state capital on Monday.

The No. 6 Golden Hawks enter the tournament with a 14-3 overall record, winners of eight straight including their substate final on Wednesday. The Golden Hawks were regular season co-champions of the River Valley Conference. This is their first state tournament appearance since 2007.

The Golden Hawks will meet West Lyon of Inwood in Monday’s quarterfinal round at Principal Park. The Wildcats are also 14-3 this year. They were champions of the Siouxland conference with a 7-1 mark in league play. They are ranked ninth in class 2A in the final poll from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. West Lyon advanced to state with a 3-0 win over Unity Christian in the substate round of the playoffs this week.
