Parents from the Columbus Community School District shared their opinions on health and safety guidelines coming into the 2020-2021 school year. Approximately 140 parents responded to questions regarding their personal feelings toward sending their children back to school and issues at home if school were to be cancelled due to COVID-19. When asked about which form of learning would meet their family’s needs the most, 61% of respondents said on-site learning would be the best option. Respondents also cited lack of technology or internet, inadequate support to effectively help students, and child care as the top three issues that concerned parents if learning were to go fully online. When probed about personal protective equipment, 47% of respondents say their student will be wearing a mask when returning to on-site learning, and feel that students will need to use or have access to hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and masks in order to attend school. Columbus Community School Superintendent Jeff Maeder says more information about their return to learn plan will be released in the coming weeks. The Columbus Community School District will begin school in person on August 24th.
