One of the first signs fall is coming is upon us. The Mid-Prairie varsity football team has been hard at work in the evenings this week to get ready for the upcoming season with their annual camp. Camp started on Monday, Thursday is the last scheduled day. Varsity players have been getting together and working with teammates and coaches each evening this week to sharpen their skills for the upcoming season. The team works on drills for the entire squad and also breaks down into position groupings for specific skill work with their position coaches. This week, Mid-Prairie head football coach Pete Cavanagh talked about his team’s off season work, the normalcy that camp brings to this year, and what they are working on. “I thought our other sports that our guys play had great seasons with players stepping up. Boys sports in general at Mid-Prairie are taking a step forward. Our guys that weren’t in other sports were doing a good job of hitting the weight room up until everything stopped in March. During that down time we were really limited in our contact with the athletes. We would send out presentations and workouts through emails. I will say this though, I was pleased when we started up work last month that our guys came in shape and ready to go. During this week of camp we’re trying to get a lot in. There’s a lot of install and a lot of thinking. Once you get the pads on you go back to the fundamentals. There is a nice sense of normalcy about this. For two hours each day we get to do what we do. Get out here and coach, learn be around the kids. We are taking precautions with masks for coaches, staff and going over rules and regulations with the guys but it does feel good to get back to normal. I miss being here and coaching them up, and they miss football too, you can tell their spirits are up. We’re excited, kids have a lot of energy. They are ready to go. We have 57 kids out, which is up from last year. It’s pretty exciting.”
The Golden Hawks have canceled their scheduled scrimmage with West Liberty on August 21st and will instead host an inter-squad night at Dwight G. Sattler Field in Wellman. Mid-Prairie opens the season Friday, August 28th by hosting Sigourney-Keota.
