August is National Breastfeeding Month and the theme this year is Many Voices United. The United States Breastfeeding Committee aims to encourage families, communities, and support breastfeeding while improving the health of mothers and babies. According to the United States Breastfeeding Committee, it’s critical for us to “come together to identify and implement the policy and systems changes that are needed to ensure that every family that chooses breastfeeding has the support and resources they need to succeed. Unequal access to breastfeeding supportive policies and environments have created persistent racial and ethnic disparities in breastfeeding initiation and duration.”
The Iowa WIC Program provides education and support for families who choose to breastfeed their babies. WIC provides assistance for families with pregnant women or young children with a supplemental nutrition program, and it also provides support and connects participants to community resources.
