The 2010s were full of outstanding sports achievements from schools in Southeast Iowa and KCII wants to look back at some of the top moments of the decade for area schools. Today, we start with a look at some of the headlining stories from the year 2010.
The fall of 2010 was a fun one for the WACO football team, as they compiled a school record 12 wins en route to their first state semifinal appearance at the UNI-Dome. Spencer Shepherd capped off an illustrious career with 1,761 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns that set the all time rushing mark at WACO. The Warriors steamrolled their first 12 opponents before falling to North Tama in the semis.
Columbus Community has always had a strong wrestling tradition and Seth Noble continued that success in the winter of 2010. The Wildcat finished the season a perfect 48-0 to stand a top of the podium at 140 lbs including winning the state title match 5-2 at Wells Fargo. The Columbus track team also had excitement a few months later when Sam Chaney was the first Wildcat in school history to win a state title in a distance event. After nabbing second in the two-mile race earlier in the week at the Blue Oval, Chaney turned around and took top honors in the one-mile by beating the runner he lost to in the previous race.
Highland relay runners also had a lot to cheer about that weekend in Des Moines including coming home with a first place trophy. The 4x200m relay team wiped the floor with the competition winning state by three seconds and those participants included Allison Sojka, Kayla Schnieder, Mollie Kloepfer, and Brittany Stewart. The Huskies also finished third in the 4x400m, fourth in the sprint medley, and fifth in the 4x100m.
Check back in tomorrow as we continue our top stories of the decade for area schools, taking a look at the year 2011.
