As we wait to start up another fall sports season, KCII wants to look back and relive some nostalgic sports memories of the past decade. Today, we headline some of the top stories for Washington High School from the year 2010.
The Demon softball team had a strong summer 10 years ago finishing with a 27-10 record and an appearance in the regional semifinal round. A big reason for their success was the work from senior Lucy Libe. She led the team with 65 hits, 40 runs, and produced an eye-popping .533 batting average. That mark shattered the previous Southeast Conference batting average record that was set nearly 20 years earlier. Libe paced a potent Demon offense, as eight players batted over .300. The senior was a multi-sport star in her day, also breaking a track school record in the 400m hurdles.
Another big story from Washington in 2010 was a memorable winter for a few basketball players, as both the boys and girls program had an individual that eclipsed the sacred 1,000 career point mark. Cassey Sobaski was Washington’s point guard all four years of high school and became only the third player in program history to pass 1,000 points in an early season win over Fairfield. She averaged 14 points per night her senior season and led the Demons to a Southeast Conference crown. On the boys’ side, Isaac Gardner reached the milestone in just two and a half years of varsity ball. He impressed for 20.7 points and 9.6 rebounds a game for a team that finished 16-7.
Our search for the top sports stories of the decade continues tomorrow when we take a look at the year 2011 for Washington Athletics.
