We continue our review of the last decade for Mid-Prairie athletics with a look at the 2011-12 school year.

On the softball diamond the Golden Hawks made another trip to Fort Dodge and the state tournament. Mid-Prairie qualified for state with a come from behind 12-6 win over Clarke of Osceola in Oskaloosa. The Hawks fell to Ballard in the state quarterfinals by a 5-4 score. Mid-Prairie would rebound to beat Davenport Assumption 9-0 in their first consolation game before dropping a 3-0 decision to East Marshall to finish in sixth place. Those Golden Hawks hit .349 for the year, seventh best in class 3A. They were led by Mallory McArtor, Emmie Leinen and Amber Kral all hitting over .400. Mid-Prairie had a team ERA of 1.85, ninth in 3A led by Olivia Lugar and Taylor Kurtz.

The Mid-Prairie boys and girls track teams sent a combined nine events to the state meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. On the boys side highlights included Jaemin Powell fourth in the 100m dash, the 4×200 team of Jaemin and Canaan Powell, Ryan Hoffman and Steven Jones sixth, Hoffman ninth in the 400, Jaemin Powell 10th in the long jump and 16th for the 4×800 team of Jones, Jack Draper, Jake O’Donnell and Peter Schwartz.

For the Golden Hawk girls on the track highlights included a fifth place finish for the 4×100 team of Lexi Duwa, Courtney Shalla and Meghan and Kattie Redlinger, 10th for the 4×200 team of Duwa, Jessi Butters and the Redlingers, 11th for the 4×800 team of Tayler Foster, Butters, Mallory McArtor and Meghan Redlinger and 24th for McArtor in the 400 hurdles.

The Golden Hawk cross country programs sent three runners to Fort Dodge and the state meet. In the girls race, Sofia Chmaruk was 13th in 15:37 and Mallory McArtor was 18th in 15:42. For the Mid-Prairie boys Peter Schwartz was 27th in 16:50.

The Mid-Prairie football team made it back to the playoffs in the fall of 2011, finishing a 6-3 regular season with a 5-2 mark in district play. The Golden Hawks were eliminated in the opening round of the postseason at Wilton 42-20. Highlights from the year included a Jaemin Powell 95 yard kickoff return for touchdown against Wilton in the playoffs, tied for the longest return in Mid-Prairie history, and an 86-year touchdown run for Steven Jones against Eddyville-Blakesburg, the sixth longest run in Mid-Prairie history.

The Mid-Prairie girls basketball brought home a Cedar Valley Conference title during the 2011-12 school year, finishing with a 17-6 overall record and going 13-1 in league play. The Hawks scored a 50-38 win at state ranked Iowa City Regina late in the year to share the title with the Regals. The Golden Hawks were led by Mallory McArtor’s 229 points, Mariah Swartzentruber’s conference best 55 blocked shots and Meghan Redlinger with 86 steals and 67 assists, both number in the top five in the CVC. Wednesday will feature the 2012-13 academic year for athletics at Mid-Prairie in our decade in review.
