The City of Brighton is moving forward with mandated improvements to their waste water treatment plant. This $4.6 million project will see the installation of a submerged attached growth reactor system to their aerated lagoon to meet Iowa Department of Natural Resources standards, provide adequate ammonia removal, and fix issues with inflow and infiltration. To fund the project, the city was awarded a $2 million grant and a $2,311,000 loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and $300,000 from the State of Iowa. The city worked alongside French-Reneker Associates of Fairfield to design the new treatment plant. Construction permits were approved by the DNR in March and the bidding process has begun. The city will have a year to initiate construction on the project or else their construction permit is invalid by Iowa DNR standards. Federation Bank will provide interim construction financing for the project.
