We continue our review of the last decade for Hillcrest Academy Raven athletics with a look at the 2013-14 school year.

On the cross country course in the fall, Kirby Shetler punched his ticket into the class 1A state meet in Fort Dodge. Shetler would go on to finish in 37th place with a time of 17:41.

In the spring the Ravens were back at state, this time on the track with Riley Schmeider. She brought home a pair of top 10s, taking ninth in the 1500m and 10th in the 3000.

On the volleyball court the Ravens were an impressive 26-11 and spent most of the year ranked in the class 1A top 15. Hillcrest advanced all the way to the regional final, coming up one step shy of state at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids as they were swept by Janesville. Olivia Yutzy led the Superconference and was fourth in the state with 414 kills. Casey Perez finished ninth in Iowa with 619 assists. Kristin Davis led the Raven defense and was second in the Superconference with 360 digs.

The Raven girls basketball team finished above .500 with a 14-10 overall record including a 9-9 mark in the Southeast Iowa Superconference North. The Ravens advanced to the regional semifinal round of the playoffs with a wild 45-36 triple overtime win against Prince of Peace in Kalona. They would bow out to Winfield-Mt. Union in the next round. For the season the Ravens were led by Olivia Yutzy’s 432 points, best in the north division of the Superconference. She also pulled down 188 boards, fourth in the league. Kristin Davis dished out 102 assists, fourth most in the division. Davis knocked down 52 three point goals, second most in the north.

The Hillcrest boys were 18-5 overall on the basketball court 13-3 and runners-up in the north division of the Superconference behind Pekin. After a successful regular season, the Ravens were upset at Fairfield by their rival Lone Tree in the first round of the playoffs 50-35. Friday will feature the 2014-15 academic year for athletics at Hillcrest Academy in our decade in review.
