The driver who dragged a Washington Police Officer several blocks has been identified and an arrest warrant has been issued. She is still at large. Washington Police Chief Jim Lester announced Wednesday that an arrest warrant for 42-year-old Mary Bella Brooks with $50,000 cash only bond has been issued. She faces felony charges of theft in the second degree, assault while participating in a felony, assault on a peace officer using a dangerous weapon, and interference with official acts using a dangerous weapon. She’s also been charged with interference with official acts causing bodily injury and traffic violations. Brooks lists an address in Des Moines.
She’s previously been found guilty of felony burglary in Iowa in Poweshiek and Polk counties, as well as attempted burglary in Dallas County.
Brooks was the driver of a vehicle that was stopped in Washington at 12:25 a.m. on August 2nd. The police officer asked Brooks to exit the vehicle after learning the car was stolen from Des Moines. She refused and drove away from the scene, dragging the officer with the vehicle. In bodycam footage released by the police department, the officer can be heard calling for help and telling her to stop the car and let him go. The officer received minor injuries, and was treated and released from the Washington County Hospital.
Brooks had provided the officer false information regarding her identity during the traffic stop. She abandoned the black car and allegedly stole a tan Ford Escape from Washington. She then fled the area. The Escape was recovered by Des Moines Police earlier this week.
The investigation continues and additional charges are pending DCI Lab results.
Anyone with information on the location of Brooks is asked to contact their local law enforcement or the Washington County Communications at 319-653-2107.
