KCII’s look back at some of the top sports stories of the 2010s decade continues today with some big moments at Washington High School from the year 2013.

A memorable highlight in the winter of 2013 was when one Demon wrestler finished the season a top of the podium at Wells Fargo Arena. Fletcher Green busted onto the scene in his junior campaign and swept the competition in Des Moines en route to a class 2A title at 113 lbs. Green won his four matches at state by 7-0, 11-5, 6-1, and 8-3 decision victories to finish the season 36-5 overall. He went on to reach state all four years of high school and was the sixth wrestling champ in Demon history including the first since 1997.

A magical run on the gridiron propelled the Demon boys of fall to a state championship appearance and a 12-2 campaign. After an early season loss to Pella, Washington rallied off 11 straight wins including getting revenge on the Dutch in the playoffs with a 28-0 victory. That win sent Washington to the UNI-Dome where they upended perennial power Solon 14-9 in the class 3A semifinal before falling to Bishop Heelan in the title game. The offense rushed for more than 4,000 yards on the season with Alex Coker racking up 1,467 yards on the ground and 25 touchdowns. The defense was stringy all year long giving up just 12 points a night.

For the second straight summer the Demon softball team punched their ticket to Fort Dodge and once again placed fourth at state. Washington was 30-13 on the season and beat North Scott in the regional final to advance to the big dance. At state the Demons beat Solon and then fell to Carlisle and Indianola in the consolation matches. Kaitlin Buchholz led the team at the plate with a .453 average and 53 RBI.

A few months earlier the girls basketball program captured their second straight Southeast Conference crown. Their 6-2 mark in league play stood a top of the conference and they finished 14-8 overall.

One Washington girls’ track athlete found success at the Blue Oval in Des Moines, as Sammy Ellingson finished third at state in the high jump with a leap of 5’4’’.

We continue our top stories of the decade tomorrow when we take a look at the year 2014.
