KCII’s coverage of the top sports stories from the 2010s decade continues today taking a look at big events in the year 2015 from area schools.

Twin brothers in Drew and Bryce West continued to dominant the mat in the 2014-2015 season for Highland with Bryce adding a title to his resume. The sophomore matched his brother’s win total from the previous year finishing a perfect 50-0 and claimed a title at 120 lbs. Drew won it all the year prior as a freshman at 106 lbs and then was bumped up to 113 lbs where he placed third at Wells Fargo Arena in his sophomore campaign. (Spoiler alert for tomorrow: the duo would be back for more in 2016.) Other top area finishes included Columbus Community’s Josh Keller second at 106 lbs and Sigourney-Keota’s Nathan Fritz was third at 145 lbs.

It was a fall to remember for Winfield-Mt. Union football faithful, as the Wolves dominated all year en route to a perfect regular season. WMU had a five win improvement from 2014 and finished the campaign 10-1 falling to Lynnville-Sully 29-28 in the second round of the playoffs. The Wolves had an average margin victory of 32  including putting up 41 points a night. Kolt Rossiter threw for over 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns while Darren Hunter reached pay dirt 15 times on the ground.

For the third straight year Highland cross country runner Keiffer Sexton competed at the state meet in Fort Dodge and finished his career in the top five. The senior placed fifth in class 1A with a time of 17:00.

Three area boys’ track athletes placed in the top three at the Blue Oval for state with Lone Tree’s Jovonte Squires placing third in the long jump, Highland’s Keiffer Sexton third in the 3200m run, and WACO’s Bryce Achen third in the 200m.

Tomorrow our look back at the decade continues with the year 2016.
