We continue our review of the last decade for Hillcrest Academy Raven athletics with a look at the 2015-16 school year.
A pair of Hillcrest girls qualified for the state track meet in Des Moines. Emma Beachy placed 20th in the discus with a throw of 94’7″. Rubye Ney was 23rd in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:11.84.
On the boys side, Drake Brezina qualified for the state track meet in Des Moines in the 400 for the Ravens. He placed in 23rd with a time of 53.76 seconds.
For the second straight year senior Eli Gingerich was named Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division basketball player of the year. As captain of the Hillcrest boys he scored 18 points per game, dished out 144 assists, and had 77 steals, all second in the conference. The Hillcrest boys finished the season at 9-7 in the Superconference and 12-11 overall.
Hillcrest head boys basketball coach Dwight Gingerich also posted his 600th career win during this calendar year. He became the 11th coach in the history of the state to reach the milestone at this time. His numbers at the end of the season when he broke the mark included 609 wins, 29 of 33 winning seasons, 19 seasons with 20 or more wins, 12 state tournament appearances, five state championship game appearances and one state title, in 1992.
