Our look back at the top sports stories of the 2010s decade continues today highlighting events in 2015 at Washington High School.

First place hardware was added to the trophy case at Washington High in the spring of 2015 when the Demon girls’ golf program won their first state title in seven years. There was no sweating it out for the Orange and Black and they took home first by 24 strokes with a two-day score of 698. Freshman Sarah Nacos busted onto the scene and ran away with the individual title shooting a +13 score of 155 in 36-holes. Deanna Peiffer and Sarah Waite also cracked the top 10 in eighth and ninth, respectively. This team title breakthrough woke a sleeping giant, as the Demons would go on to win three titles in a four year span.

It was a big year for Demon wrestler Brad Skubal, as the 195 lb grappler finished second at Wells Fargo Arena in class 2A to mark his second straight year on the podium. The senior won by a 12-7 decision, fall, and 4-3 decision before dropping the title match 9-2 to conclude the winter 43-4. Teammate Kyle Anderson nabbed eighth place at 120 lbs.

A pair of Demon track athletes brought home hardware from the state meet in Des Moines. Macy Marek placed third at the Blue Oval in the girls’ 100m dash with a time of 13.15 seconds and fellow senior Tommy Peterson had a third place heave of 53’4’’ in the boys’ shot put.
