The City of Kalona is wrapping up cleaning efforts after last Monday’s powerful derecho swept through eastern Iowa. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh told the city council in their meeting on Monday that the most significant damage was downed power lines and trees causing some loss of power to residents throughout the community. Most of the heavy work was completed last Thursday as 15 volunteer firefighters in Kalona helped community members with downed trees and fallen branches. They took the debris to the community brush pile. Some Kalona street sweepers were sent over to Wellman to aid in their cleanup efforts. Schlabaugh says the Kalona community was fortunate to walk away from the powerful storm with only minor damages. The final items to be completed will be sweeping the streets to pick up any debris left on the roads.
