The top sports stories of the 2010s decade continues today, as we dive into the big moments of 2018 at Washington High School.

The dynasty that is the Washington girls’ golf program could not be stopped and for the third time in four years the Demons were back on top. Washington placed first at state in class 3A with a 662 score that beat second place by 28 strokes. Sara Nacos just missed out on her fourth individual title and the senior nabbed third with (+16) 158. Freshman sister Anna Nacos was fourth with (+17) 159.

The boys’ golf team also flexed their muscles that spring, as they ended the year at state as well. The Demons placed seventh out of nine with a two-day score of 663. Jacob Van Osdol had the top finish in 25th with a (+17) 161 and Brock Sobaski was not far behind in 30th with (+18) 162. 

After his brother Brennan qualified for the state cross country meet the year prior, junior Evan Horak followed suit in the fall of 2018 punching his ticket to Fort Dodge. Horak placed 94th in class 3A out of 131 runners with a time of 18:00.5. This was the third straight season the Orange and Black was represented at state.

The sport of archery continued its rise in Washington when the Demons once again competed at Nationals in Kentucky. The team finished in the top half of both the 3D and bullseye competition. Alexis Ide ranked 121st out of 2,393 high school girls in the bullseye competition with a score of 285. Samantha Mellinger shot a 280 in 3D that put her at 77th out of 768. 

The Demon softball team won a share of the Southeast Conference crown with a 10-6 mark in league play. Freshman Kellie Dallmeyer had a breakout campaign with a .442 average and 23 RBI while Molly Sparks had a 3.84 ERA in the circle. The baseball team had a strong season as well going 21-12 with Luke Turner and Cade Hennigan producing matching .469 batting averages.
