Our coverage of the top sports stories of the decade concludes today when we take a look at Washington from the year 2019.

Going out on top is what Washington senior grappler Tristin Westphal-Edwards was able to accomplish in February of 2019 with a state championship season at 182 lbs. The senior had a perfect 43-0 season in class 2A at 182 lbs and had an exciting 6-5 decision victory in the title match at Wells Fargo Arena. Westphal-Edwards was the seventh Demon to stand on top of the podium in school history including the first since 2013.

For the fourth straight year Washington was represented at the state cross country meet in Fort Dodge when Lance Sobaski cracked the top 15 at districts in Solon. The sophomore then went on to finish 95th out of 130 runners last fall at state clocking in at 17:48.9.

Four Demon track athletes brought home some hardware from the Blue Oval after a successful trip at state. Individuals that received medals included Ethan Hunt sixth in the boys’ 400m hurdles, Jenah Greiner and Isabel Bailey seventh and eighth, respectively in the girls’ long jump, and Mitchell Driscoll eighth in the boys’ 400m.

Like clockwork, the Washington girls’ golf team ended the season once again at the state tournament making it six in a row for the program. The team placed sixth overall headlined by Kiki Guo (Bruner) in fourth with a 36-hole score of (+11) 153. The Demons were favorites to take the crown in 2020, but there was no season due to the pandemic.

In one of the wildest games you will ever see on the gridiron, the Washington football team punched their ticket to the class 3A playoffs following a 64-61 slugfest victory over Mount Pleasant in the regular season finale. There was over 1,100 yards of offense combined between the two teams including senior quarterback Luke Turner producing 559 yards and being responsible for six touchdowns. The three-year starter barreled his way into the end zone in the final minute that proved to be the game winner. The Demons fell to Western Dubuque in the first round to conclude the season 7-3.

The Demon girls’ soccer team had their strongest season to date with a six win improvement from 2018 and finished 8-9 overall including starting 5-1. Trina Griffin was a scoring machine with 19 goals and Greta Rothe tallied 13.
