Football is officially back. The much anticipated start to the season is here and one area team will put on the pads a week early when Columbus Community travels to Cardinal tonight for week zero action.
The Wildcats finished 1-9 in 2019 and they look for improvement this go around with first-year head coach Dave Lekwa at the helm. Will Schwab is a feature back that returns after 434 rushing yards and two touchdowns last year.
The Comets started 4-0 last fall before dropping their last five and finished the campaign 4-5. Cardinal threw nearly 20 times a game in 2019 and they return quarterback Maddux Jones. The junior recorded 1,440 passing yards and 12 touchdowns last season.
Lekwa tells KCII Sports what he wants to see out of his guys in the first game. “Last year they shut us out, so right away we want to put points on the board. We need to feel comfortable moving the ball with the backs finding the holes and the guys upfront knowing who to block. Defensively we know they are going to throw the ball around so our secondary has to come to play. Limit that attack and we’ll see where we are at when the fourth quarter rolls around.”
It all commences at 7 p.m. tonight at Cardinal High School.
