The Iowa High School football season commenced on Friday with one area team competing in week zero action and Columbus Community started up their campaign falling to Cardinal 62-26.

The potent passing attack for the Comets was hard to stop, as junior quarterback Maddux Jones was laser sharp going 15 for 16 with 332 yards through the air and five touchdowns. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one and 36-7 at the break before extending it in the second half. The Wildcats did generate some offense in the final two quarters and sophomore Jeff Hoback finished six of eight for 123 yards passing and one touchdown. His one score was received by Triston Miller and Tucker Bright was the main target with three receptions for 116 yards. Will Schwab added 13 carries on the ground for 102 yards and led the defense with seven tackles.

Wildcat head coach Dave Lekwa tells KCII Sports there was some positive signs from his offense Friday night. “We were able to put some good drives together. We have a brand new system for the boys and I thought we played well overall. I thought a lot of times we were just one block away from busting a big play. Last year we only scored 10 touchdowns all season and tonight we were able to score four against Cardinal’s first team defense so I am pleased with that.”

Columbus starts the year 0-1 and they get back on the gridiron Friday against Louisa-Muscatine for the home opener.
