The high school volleyball season commenced on Monday in Wayland and WACO had a solid showing on opening night with a second place finish in their home tournament.

The Warriors started the day by sweeping Columbus with set scores of 21-9 and 21-11 and then cruised past Van Buren 21-12 and 21-10. That win propelled them to the championship match where West Burlington edged them with matching set scores of 21-15. Sophomore Grace Coble had a big day for WACO with 38 assists in the three matches, Morgan Graber recorded 15 kills, Aubri Garnsey had 22 digs, and Lindsey Roth was a perfect 20-for-20 serving.

After dropping the first match to the Warriors, Columbus bounced back and won a consolation game against Pekin in three sets. Sigourney also competed and dropped a pair of matches being swept by West Burlington and Wapello.

The Savages get back on the court Tuesday against Pekin, the Wildcats face Keota tomorrow, and the Warriors are off until next Thursday when they travel to Wapello.
