Crops are on track with the five-year average in southeast Iowa as soil moisture is mostly short in the area. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, southeast Iowa’s topsoil moisture is rated at 40% very short, 32% short, and 28% adequate. The district’s subsoil moisture is in slightly better shape with 31% very short, 30% short, and 39% adequate.
Soybeans are beginning to color in southeast Iowa and 91% are setting pods, just 1% ahead of the five-year average. Corn is on par with the five-year average with 85% in the dough stage.
Statewide corn is rated at 6% excellent, 44% good, 29% fair, 13% poor, and 8% very poor. Soybeans are rated at 6% excellent, 50% good, 31% fair, 9% poor, and 4% very poor.
