Taking it to a program that hasn’t played a game in two years is what the Winfield-Mt. Union football team was aiming to do Friday night and that’s exactly what they did by starting the new season handling Tri-County 44-8.
The Wolves didn’t pass all game, but they didn’t need to by compiling 266 yards on the ground and imposing their will early. Noah Sparrow got the scoring started with a 46-yard touchdown run in the first with the two-point conversion successful. The Trojans answered with their only scoring drive of the game to tie it at 8-8, but the celebration was short lived. Caleb Faler took the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to the house and the floodgates were open. The second quarter belonged to Caleb Giese, as the sophomore running back tallied rushing scores from seven, four, and 17 yards out to open up a 36-8 advantage at the break. Noah Sparrow put the finishing touches on the game with a one-yard scamper that reached pay dirt in the third and WMU was able to utilize their bench players the rest of the way.
Sparrow finished with 14 carries for 184 yards and two touchdowns while Giese had 35 yards with the three scores.
The Wolves’ defense kept the Trojans in check only allowing 185 total yards and forced one turnover with a fumble recovery by Jack Jennings. Chance Malone registered seven tackles.
WMU starts up the new campaign 1-0 and they look for a win streak next week when they hit the road to Montezuma.
