Iowans are reminded to celebrate the upcoming three-day Labor Day holiday weekend safely. Traditionally people celebrate the milestone for the end of summer with road trips and barbecues. The Iowa Department of Public Safety states the Labor Day weekend is one of the deadliest times of the year in terms of drunk-driving. During the 2018 Labor Day holiday there were 439 traffic fatalities nationwide and 43% involved drivers who had been drinking with 38% involving drivers over the legal limit. Last year, Iowa had six fatalities over the three-day Labor Day weekend.
People are encouraged to set up a safe way home before going out. Law enforcement officers across the state are taking part in the 2020 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign from now through September 7th. There will be extra law enforcement out. Remember, drive sober or get pulled over.
