Drought conditions and rapidly drying crops are becoming a concern for most of Iowa, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Iowa’s corn is currently rated at 4% excellent, 41% good, 30% fair, and 25% poor to very poor. Soybeans are rated at 5% excellent, 45% good, 32% fair, and 18% poor to very poor. Pasture conditions fell to 16% good to excellent, with 35% fair, 31% poor and 18% very poor.
In southeast Iowa 50% of corn has dented and 4% is mature, while 12% of soybeans are coloring.
Some producers have started supplemental feeding of hay for cattle due to deteriorating pasture conditions. Also, in the last week some farmers have been cleared to mow or disc in their corn damaged by the derecho.
