Iowa’s subsoil moisture levels have dropped to over three-quarters of the state being short or very short. This August, according to the National Weather Service, was the driest August on record for Washington. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, drought conditions are becoming a worry across the Hawkeye State. In southeast Iowa, topsoil moisture as of August 30th is rated at 43% very short, 27% short, and 30% adequate. In the southeast district, subsoil moisture is rated at 34% very short, 29% short, and 37% adequate.

At this time last year, statewide topsoil moisture was 30% short to very short, and subsoil moisture was rated 29% short to very short.
