The schedule ramps up this week for the Winfield-Mt. Union football team when they make their first road trip of the season tomorrow at Montezuma.

It was an emphatic start to the new campaign for the Wolves in week one, as they took care of Tri-County 44-8. Noah Sparrow led the rushing attack with 184 yards and two touchdowns while Caleb Giese reached pay dirt three times. Chance Malone had nine tackles for a defense that held the Trojans to 190 yards of total offense.

The competition gets tougher with the Braves, as they are coming off of a 6-3 season in 2019 and last week they upended Kingsley-Pierson 39-38. Eddie Burgess is in his second year under center for the Braves and last week threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns while adding three more on the ground.

WMU Head Coach Scott McCarty knows the challenge that Burgess brings. “He is about the same size as Nate Stanley so he is a big kid for 8-man. Last year he was a load for us so we have to be fundamental on defense and bring a lot of pursuit to the ball. He has a great arm and they have a really good receiver in Trey Shearer that we will have to key on as well.”

The road contest begins at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Montezuma.
