Exorcising the demon that is the Solon football team is exactly what the Washington Demons will try to do tonight when they make a trip north to face the Spartans for week two action.

Solon has been the team that has had the Demons number in recent history, winning six of the last seven meetings dating back to 2014. Washington had the eventual state runner-up on the ropes last year by leading at half, but a big final two quarters for the Spartans propelled them to a 35-20 win. Solon does have a new look this year with long-time head coach Kevin Miller gone and plenty of seniors lost to graduation. The #9 in class 2A Spartans opened the new campaign falling to Williamsburg 17-14 last week on a late field goal. Jackson Ryan was a bright spot for the offense with 10 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown. Despite the loss, the defense only gave up 190 yards total.

Demon Head Coach James Harris knows the challenge that is ahead. “They have good schemes on offense as far as their run game goes and they have big receivers on the outside. Just like Bettendorf, Solon is a high-class program that has a winning culture. We have had a really hard time going up there to play and they have always been a big challenge for us. We are just hoping to stay the course, focus, and play our best football.”

The Demons skyrocketed to #4 in the latest rankings for class 3A after their 19-10 win over perennial power Bettendorf. Washington picked off the Bulldogs three times in the second half and did not allow a point in the final two and a half quarters.

The non-district clash begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Solon. Limited attendance will be allowed with fans needing a voucher to enter. Can’t make it to the game?
