The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves football team suffered their first setback of 2020 on Friday, dropping a 73-32 contest on the road to top five Montezuma. The Braves piled up the points in a hurry, finding the end zone five times in the game’s first frame, the Wolves scored once, finding themselves down 35-8 after the first 12 minutes. The second quarter also belonged to Monte, as they outscored the Wolves 17-8, leaving WMU trailing 52-16 at half. Montezuma would put the game out of reach with a pair of third quarter touchdowns to stretch the lead to 66-16. Winfield-Mt. Union found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to reach 32 points.
The Wolves posted an impressive 402 yards of total offense including 359 on the ground. Montezuma had 508 yards of total offense with 375 coming through the air. The Wolves were led by Cam Buffington with 208 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Buffington had six and a half tackles defensively. Griffin Humphreys had a fumble recovery. Eddie Burgess led the Braves going 19 of 24 through the air for 375 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 91 yards and four more scores on 10 carries. Winfield-Mt. Union had three turnovers on the night. The Wolves are now 1-1 on the year as Montezuma improves to 2-0. The Wolves will travel to Twin Cedars on the 11th.
