A long bus ride home is always better after a win. It was all smiles for the Winfield-Mt. Union football team on Friday, as they traveled 90 minutes west to Bussey to face Twin Cedars and rocked the Sabers in a 62-6 victory.
If Wolves’ fans didn’t know who Cam Buffington was before the season, they know him now. The 6’2’’ 185 lbs freshman running back followed up a 200 yard rushing performance in week two with an encore last night that featured a little bit of everything. He had his way against the Sabers breaking out for 141 rushing yards on just eight carries and reaching pay dirt on five of them. For good measure, Buffington also returned an interception for a score and had four tackles offensively.
Twin Cedars had a spark early by striking first on an interception return for a touchdown to lead 6-0. That spark quickly flamed out and WMU answered with fireworks by scoring 30 points to end the quarter and put the game away early. In addition to Buffington reaching the end zone six times, Andrew Brady got in on the fun with a 34 yard touchdown and Noah Sparrow managed a pick-six from 30 yards out. The Wolves ran for 283 yards while the defense held the Sabers to just 23.
Head Coach Scott McCarty tells KCII Sports his team responded well after the Sabers had their only score. “We were all gas, no brakes after that. Our kids did a great job of bouncing back after that adversity. They played really physical last night and that embodied what we have been talking about. Our offensive line has done a great job and we will go as far as they take us. They are big, move well, and are starting to play behind the pads.”
The Wolves move to 2-1 and capture their first multiple win season since 2015. They return home next week hosting Iowa Valley (2-1).
