One person was killed, and two others injured in a two-vehicle wreck in Louisa County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, at 4:16 p.m. Friday the wreck happened on U.S. Highway 61, south of Highway 78 near Newport Junction. The two vehicles involved were a Chrysler Town and Country driven by 82-year-old Hermann Josef Schafer of Burlington and a Nissan Titan driven by 57-year-old Andrew Lloyd Beaver of Wapello.

The Schafer vehicle was southbound on Highway 61 and when approaching a curve in the roadway went off the road onto the west shoulder for an unknown reason. Schafer then over-corrected and crossed the center line into the northbound lane striking the Beaver vehicle. Schafer died at the scene.

Beaver was transported by Morning Sun Ambulance to Great River Medical Center. A passenger of the Nissan, 56-year-old Rebecca Ann Beaver, was taken by Wapello Ambulance to Great River Medical Center.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.
