It took four sets on Thursday, but the Wapello Arrows left Kalona with a Southeast Iowa Superconference volleyball win over the Hillcrest Ravens. The Arrows took the match by scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-14. Raven head coach Taylor Kurtz spoke after the match about what propelled her team to the set one victory. “I told the girls that even though we got a win already this season, we have two home games left and I really want them to win one at home. I also told them that we needed to come out with energy in the first set like we had at Pekin earlier in the week in the third set. They responded and we were able to win that. We just got tight overall. Yani (Gutierrez’) sets were incredible today. She was able to find the open spots on the court. Esther Hughes really hit the ball well tonight also. Those two read the floor well.”
On the night the Ravens were led by Esther Hughes with eight kills. Yani Gutierrez finished with 12 assists and Grace Miller anchored the Raven defense with 25 digs. Lindsy Massner led the Arrow attack with eight kills, Serah Shafer had 28 assists and Erin Hemphill had 27 digs. With the win, Wapello improves to 6-7 overall, Hillcrest falls to 1-12.
