A pair of KCII area volleyball teams open the Southeast Iowa Superconference tournament tonight in Wayland with pool play. The WACO Warriors will host the Wapello Arrows and Highland Huskies in Thursday’s opening round action. The Warriors come into the match with an overall record of 17-1. The Warriors won the North Mahaska tournament over the weekend by beating Tri-County, Lynnville-Sully, Grinnell, HLV and Prairie City Monroe. On the year WACO is led by Morgan Graber who is best in the Superconference and fifth in 1A with 158 kills. Grace Coble leads the Warriors, the Superconference and is sixth in 1A with 314 assists. Defensively the Warriors are paced by Aubrey Garnsey with her Superconference best 194 digs. That total is third in class 1A.
Highland comes into tonight’s action with an overall record of 3-7. Last time on the floor, the Huskies beat Morningstar Academy in straight sets on Tuesday by scores of 25-8, 25-14 and 25-18. In the match, the Huskies were led by Carson Mellinger’s four kills, Dani Laughlin’s 12 assists and seven digs each from Mackinze Hora and Sarah Burton. On the year, Highland is led by Mellinger’s 31 kills. Laughlin has a team best 74 assists, eighth in the Superconference north while Burton leads the Highland defense with 57 digs.
Wapello will also be at WACO tonight. The Arrows come into play with a mark of 7-9 on the season. They dropped two of three matches Monday at the Holy Trinity Tournament, falling to Winfield-Mt. Union and Burlington. On the season the Arrows are led by Lindsy Massner with 100 kills, third most in the Superconference North division. Serah Shafer leads the north with 245 assists. Defensively, the Arrows are led by Erin Hemphill with 180 digs, second best in the north division. Action begins tonight at 5p.m. at WACO High School.
