A battle of 3-1 teams will duke it out in New London tonight when the upstart Winfield-Mt. Union football team makes the trip to face the Tigers.
If you like old school football that is decided on the ground, this one is for you. Both offenses have combined for 2,648 yards in four contests and only 114 of them have been through the air. Two of the most electric backs in 8-player district 4 will be featured with WMU freshman Cam Buffington racking up 554 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns and the Tigers’ Blaise Porter coming in with 718 yards and 13 scores. Both defenses have been equally productive with New London giving up 26 points a night to WMU’s 24. The Wolves are riding high after a 28-12 homecoming win over Iowa Valley last week and New London defeated Lone Tree 54-26.
Buffington, who is also our JET Physical Therapy Football Athlete of the Week, understands there is no secret to coming out on top tonight. “Their run game is what is going to make them go. We have said all along that our defense is setup to stop the run. I think it is going to be a really good game. It is going to be their homecoming so we will have to come with some fire and spirit.”
The Tigers have won the last four meetings between these clubs with a combined score of 207-28. The battle for second place in the district begins at 7 p.m. tonight in New London.
