A Mt. Pleasant man faces multiple charges including assault on a police officer after fighting and resisting arrest and breaking restraints in a squad car Thursday. According to the Mt. Pleasant Police Department, at 12:18 p.m. police stopped a motor vehicle in the 400 block of West Washington Street for failure to have plates. The driver was 28-year-old Kevin Fleming who was known to not have a valid license.

After the vehicle stopped, Fleming attempted to walk away and would not comply with officers as they asked him to get back in the vehicle. He then resisted arrest and assaulted officers. Several other officers arrived on scene and attempted to get him in restraints but Fleming continued to kick and struggle with officers. He was placed in the back of a patrol car and broke leg restraints.

More officers and jail staff arrived with a transport van. Fleming continued to resist. After 45 minutes, he was secured in the back of the transport van and taken to the Henry County Jail.

He was charged with no driver’s license, failure to provide insurance, two counts of assault on police officers, and interference with official acts with injuries. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department was assisted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the Henry County Jail, and the Iowa State Patrol. Fleming has since bonded out of jail.
