Iowa’s soybean and corn harvests are underway. Farmers are seeing the largest proportion harvested by this time of the year since 2012 for both corn and soybeans. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 12% of corn and 30% of soybeans have been harvested.
In southeast Iowa, 69% of corn is mature and 14% has been harvested. Locally, 69% of soybeans are dropping leaves and 17% of the crop has been harvested. Statewide corn is rated at 42% good to excellent and soybeans are 47% good to excellent.
Mitchell Hora with Continuum Ag encourages farmers to be safe as harvest continues and reach out for help if stress escalates, “I think the main thing, you know, for farmers is to really dial in on factoring in that stress and understand that it’s okay to be stressed out. You have a lot on your plate. And there’s been a lot of ups and downs this year. And I hope that prices will continue to respond to help us out and to help ensure that we’re able to carry on and continue to build up our family farms for future years. But definitely do not be afraid to reach out, to admit that, ‘Hey, I need some help.’ And understand that things are going to be okay, even though the day to day, especially the grind this time of year when we’re working 13-, 15-, 18-hour days. It gets to be really taxing. It’s important, you know, to spend the time with your family. The work will still be there tomorrow, don’t over-stress yourself out.” The Iowa Concern Hotline is available 24/7 for anyone to call and seek help.
As harvest continues, people are reminded to watch for slow-moving farm equipment on the roads and give them plenty of space.
